Moving – How to Declutter Before Packing Boxes
Packing and moving can be a real chore, so why not make it as easy as possible? There are many things you can do to help streamline your move. One of the best things you can do should happen before you start packing boxes, and that is to declutter. Not sure how to declutter or where to begin?
Get rid of things you no longer need. If you haven’t used it in ages or forgot you had it, then you probably don’t need it and it’s time to get rid of it. The result will be less to pack, less to move and no unnecessary clutter when you unpack in your new home.
Sort all unwanted items into categories – knowing what you are going to do with the items once you’ve decided to get rid of them will make the decluttering process easier. Ideally, there are four categories when it comes to decluttering before moving. Of course, there are the things you want to keep and take with you. Some people just throw everything out that they don’t want when getting ready to move but there are other options. These items can be donated or even sold.
How to Decide
There are some general rules of thumb when decluttering before packing boxes and moving. Following these will make it easier to decide what to do with unwanted items.
First of all, if it’s broken – throw it away. There are often arguments against this, like maybe it can be fixed or you have a friend that is good at fixing things. Usually, broken items have been laying around for a while just collecting dust. If you weren’t getting ready to move, you probably wouldn’t even be looking at them or thinking about them. In most cases, these items aren’t worth fixing or moving. It’s best to just throw them away.
Items that aren’t broken or damaged, especially household items or clothes, are prime candidates for donating. You probably bought the food processor with good intentions, but you only used it once or twice and now it just sits in the back of the cabinet. What about that dress that doesn’t fit anymore or those shoes that hurt your feet? Does it really make sense to haul them all the way across the country or even across town if you’re not going to wear them? If you haven’t used it or worn it in over a year, it’s time to let someone else make use of it.
If it is a particularly valuable item such as a piece of furniture or an antique that you won’t have any use for in your new home, you might want to consider selling it. You can put an ad in the local paper or online advertising that it is for sale, or you can place it in a consignment shop. If you have multiple unwanted items that have some value, you may want to have a moving sale. Any cash you make can be used to get something that will fit perfectly in your new home or even help finance your move.
Declutter Early and Quickly Before Moving
Deciding what you no longer need or want when moving should take place as soon as possible. Once you’ve decided which items you are getting rid of, do it as quickly as possible. Letting them hang around until moving time gives you a chance to change your mind. Don’t do it. The lack of clutter will make organizing and packing boxes easier, and may even motivate you to keep your new home free of clutter.
