Packing Tips for Moving Your Garage
There is really nothing easy about moving, and packing up the garage can be particularly challenging. It typically contains a wide variety of items in different shapes and sizes that can be difficult to pack. If you’ve lived in your home for a long time, the collection of stuff in your garage is probably a bit overwhelming. Where do you begin? Here are some packing tips to help you get started.
Make the Garage a Priority
Too often the job of packing up the garage falls to the bottom of the list. It’s a big job and will take a large chunk of time. One of the best packing tips is to move the garage to the top of the list. Leaving it for last when you are exhausted from packing up the rest of your home can be a mistake. It can lead to haphazard packing and things being discarded or left behind just because you want the task to be finished.
Starting on the garage as soon as your moving date is set is a packing tip that can save you a lot of aggravation. Get the whole family involved or ask a couple of friends to help if you feel the job is too big to tackle on your own, but don’t let the garage be the last area you pack up.
Packing the garage is no different from packing any of the rooms in your home. You need to make sure you have all the necessary packing supplies before you get started. This will make the task go quicker and easier. There nothing worse than being on a roll and having to stop to go out and get more packing supplies.
Make sure to have plenty of strong boxes in a variety of sizes. You will need larger boxes for things like rakes and shovels, but you will want to pack hand tools in smaller boxes so they are not too heavy to lift.
You will also want to have a variety of packing materials such as bubble wrap, packing paper, even old blankets or towels to safeguard your items. Zip lock plastic bags can be handy for small items like nuts and bolts and you’ll need packing tape and markers to seal and label your boxes.
Don’t wander around the garage, picking up and items here and there to pack. It will take forever this way. Divide your garage up into sections and tackle them one at a time. Or if you have help, give each person a section to work on.
This packing tip will save you a lot of time and will make packing up the garage a smoother and more organized process.
To Pack or Not to Pack?
Let’s be honest, we all have stuff in our garage that we never use or don’t need. Some of us have the components of a project we are going to get to someday. It’s time to reevaluate the contents of your garage and decide what’s really worth the time and effort to pack.
You may have items such as paints or chemicals that could be a safety hazard when moving or items you wonder why you kept in the first place. And are you ever really going to get to the project you were saving for someday? Anything you decide to throw away, be sure it is disposed of properly.
There will also be some items that are in good condition but you no longer have any need for them. You may want to consider giving them away to friends or donating them to charity rather than throwing them away.
If you hire a moving company, they will not allow boxes that are weak, overpacked or pose a safety hazard to be put on the truck. Even if you are doing the moving yourself, improper packing will waste time and create the potential for damage or even injury.
Make sure the items you are keeping are packed well as to ensure they arrive at your new home safely and in good condition. This is one of many packing tips that will save you time as well as aggravation.
